Rajastan has three cities especially renowned for their colour: Jaipur is the so-called 'pink
city', Jaisalmer the golden city, because the medieval fort and surrounding buildings are constructed of honey-coloured sandstone. Then there is my favourite, Jodhpur, famous for its haveli painted in a luscious blue colour derived (my guide told me), from indigo. More likely it is an alkaline lime wash stained blue by copper sulphate, to deter termites and/or to signify ownership by a Brahmin family.
