India has many step wells, of which this, Toorji Ka Jhalara, built in the 18th century, is one of the oldest and most famous. Before The Rajasthan Canal (now Indira Gandhi Canal ) was constructed to bring water to Jodhpur, step wells like these were the city's sole water supply. The level of the water goes up and down according to the seasons. When I visited, the level was quite high and had become a plunge pool for boys doing diving displays. I captured one of them in this sketch creating a small splash.
